Trump up for meet with Iran

- BY JANON FISHER

President Trump offered to sit down with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani — no strings attached — a week after both leaders were trading threats of war.

“I believe in meeting. I would certainly meet with Iran if they wanted to meet,” Trump said. “I have no preconditions, no. If they want to meet, I’ll meet. It’s good for the country. It’s good for the world.”

Last Monday, Rouhani had warned the President “don’t play with the lion’s tail” in response to Trump’s decision to pull out of the 2015 Obama administration deal to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for downscaling the country’s nuclear program.

The U.S. “must understand that war with Iran is the mother of all wars and peace with Iran is the mother of all peace,” Rouhani said.

Trump responded in an all-caps tweet, warning the Iranian leader to “BE CAUTIOUS!”

“NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE.”

On Monday, however, the President modulated his tone.

“I’m ready to meet anytime they want to. I don’t do that from strength or from weakness. I think it’s the appropriate thing to do,” he said.

Trump said no talks were in the works.

“I do believe that they will end up probably wanting to meet,” he said.

Trump’s olive branch to Iran came during a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, whom he met with at the White House Monday to help jumpstart trade talks with the European Union.
