Jeter to skip ’98 reunion
The Yankees will be honoring the 1998 Yankees at the Stadium on Saturday, August 18 when the Bombers host the Blue Jays, with one notable name not in attendance. The Captain. While celebrating the 20th Anniversary of that historic season, Core Four members Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada plan to attend, as well as Bernie Williams, Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez, David Cone, Darryl Strawberry and Joe Torre, but Derek Jeter will not be returning to the Bronx for the reunion, according to a list of attendees released by the Yankees Tuesday.
Jeter’s only appearance will be in a video message, along with World Series MVP Scott Brosius, a current coach for the Seattle Mariners. Jeter, who this past offseason was part of an ownership group that purchased the Marlins, made his last public visit to the stadium for his jersey retirement ceremony in May of last year.
Also MIA for the ceremonies will be Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, who led the Yankees in wins in 1999 with 17 and was 3-0 in the postseason with a 1.20 ERA.
Jeter’s Marlins will be just four hours south on the day of the event taking on the Nationals.
There could be a chance to recognize El Capitan three days later when the Yankees travel to Miami to face Jeter’s Marlins in an interleague game.
The party kicks off Friday when the first 10,000 fans will receive a 1998 World Championship replica trophy and will conclude Sunday when the first 10,000 fans 14 and younger will receive a 1998 World Championship replica ring.
Fans are asked to be in their seats by 12:00 p.m. Saturday for the player introductions and ceremony.
