Sale Ks dozen
Returns from 2 weeks on disabled list
Uncomfortable watching his teammates play without him and uncertain how he would fare after spending two weeks on the disabled list, Chris Sale was both excited and curious as he prepared to pitch again for the Red Sox.
Turns out, Sale was just as dominant as ever — maybe even more so.
Sale celebrated his return by striking out 12 in five shutout innings of one-hit ball, and the Red Sox moved 50 games over .500 by completing a sweep of the lowly Orioles with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.
Sale (12-4) was placed on the DL on July 28 with left shoulder inflammation. Judging by his performance, the injury is no longer an issue.
NYCFC TOPS TORONTO
Ismael Tajouri-Shradi scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute to give NYCFC a 3-2 victory over Toronto FC on Sunday.
The NYCFC attacker drove a left-footed volley past diving goalkeeper Alex Bono for his 10th goal of the season. David Villa also scored for NYCFC (14-5-5).
Sebastian Giovinco and Victor Vazquez scored for Toronto (612-5). The defending MLS Cup champions lost Jozy Altidore to a red card 11 minutes into the match. He was sent off for kicking Alexander Callens, leaving the striker facing at least a one-match ban for next weekend's trip to San Jose. The loss ended Toronto's all-competitions unbeaten streak at six.
SIMONA STOPS SLOANE
Top-ranked Simona Halep outlasted third-ranked Sloane Stephens, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4 on Sunday to win her second Rogers Cup title.
The 26-year-old Romanian star also won the hard-court event that rotates between Toronto and Montreal in 2016 in Montreal.
LIBERTY DONE IN BY DREAM
Renee Montgomery hit eight 3pointers to match the WNBA regular-season record and scored a season-high 30 points to help the Atlanta Dream beat the Liberty, 86-77, on Sunday for their sixth straight victory.
Diana Taurasi, Riquna Williams and Shekinna Stricklen also have hit eight 3-pointers in a game. Montgomery had 25 points in the second half, hitting seven 3-pointers to break the WNBA record for a half — one more than Taurasi, Sue Bird and Sami Whitcomb.
The Dream (22-10) erased a 16point, first-half deficit by scoring 21 straight points early in the third quarter and outscoring the Liberty, 32-10, in the period.
Tina Charles scored 20 of her 26 points in the first half, helping the Liberty (7-23) go into the break with a 48-37 lead. Rebecca Allen added 16 points and Bria Hartley had 12.
