They don’t often see eye to eye, but Republican Marc Molinaro and Democrat Cynthia Nixon were quick agree that Gov. Cuomo’s recent comments about America were … not so great.

Cuomo was knocked from both sides Thursday for riffing that America “was never that great,” as the gubernatorial gaffe dubbed GreatGate entered day two.

“We’re not going to make America great again — it was never that great,” Cuomo said Wednesday. “We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.”

Nixon, an actress and activist running to Cuomo’s left in the Democratic primary, characterized the comments as a bungled attempt to woo the liberal wing.

“I mean, I think Andrew Cuomo is struggling really hard to sound like a progressive, and he has actually no idea what that means,” Nixon said.

But when it came to substance of the governor’s comment, Nixon seemed to agree with Cuomo that America could be greater.

“Obviously, the greatest thing about America has always been the promise of America — the promise of America as being a place of freedom and opportunity for all, and a promise that has never been fulfilled,” Nixon said.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro, meanwhile, said Cuomo should be “ashamed” of the comments, which he called “the most insulting thing that this governor” has ever said.

“At the end of the day, I think he said exactly what he meant,” said Molinaro, who is the Dutchess County executive.

Cuomo’s comments came as he was discussing President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan — and pointing to lesser qualities, such as sexism, that he said have kept the country from true greatness.

The remarks eventually sparked the ire of Trump, who tweeted Wednesday night that Cuomo was “having a total meltdown!”

Mayor de Blasio — with whom Cuomo has routinely feuded — said Thursday he assumed the governor had misspoke.

“America is great. America has been

great. We have a lot of work to do in America to make it a more fair and just country,” de Blasio said. “But that doesn’t take away from our greatness.

“The concept of America is great and a lot of our history is, and there’s some parts of our history that, we have to be blunt about, how far we were from our ideals. But the greatness has never been in question to me.”

Asked whether Cuomo should apologize, de Blasio demurred, saying he had not seen the entirety of Cuomo’s followup statements.

Cuomo’s press secretary clarified Wednesday that while the country is great, it had not yet reached “maximum greatness.”
