LaG builder charged in $40G worker con
A New Jersey contractor on the redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport got charged with stiffing more than two dozen employees of $40,000 in wages, the New York attorney general’s office announced Thursday
Marjan Kasapinov, 63, who was arraigned at Queens Criminal Court Thursday, pleading not guilty, is accused of filing false payroll records required for public projects that covered up underpayment of $40,000 to 28 workers. Kasapinov and his business EMLO Corp, in Paterson, N.J., also failed to get compensation insurance for the hazardous work conditions.
Kasapinov’s EMLO Corp from March 2014 through March 2015 was a subcontractor tasked with removing asbestos at two hangars at LaGuardia Airport, which is getting new facilities and terminals as part of a renovation that has become a top priority for Gov. Cuomo.
The workers were listed as “Journeyman Asbestos” to be paid wage and supplemental benefits totaling $51.10 an hour. But they were only paid the $36 perhour wage portion, according to court docs.
