Bx. Dem likes Teachout AND Tish
Zephyr Teachout’s bid for attorney general is gaining some momentum — and the endorsement of an elected official who’d already backed her main rival, Public Advocate Letitia James.
Councilman Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx) told the Daily News he is “co-endorsing” Teachout, a Fordham law professor, after previously endorsing James.
“I think the candidacy of Zephyr Teachout comes at a time of grass-roots uprising against money in politics and political corruption, and she’s been a singularly pressing voice for campaign finance reform,” he said. “And she’s been at the forefront of comprehensively challenging the most corrupt presidency in American history.”
He also cited Teachout’s independence — something others have questioned about James, given the enthusiastic support she has received from Gov. Cuomo and her decision not to seek the Working Families Party line endorsement as it spurned the governor — in his support.
But Torres is not rescinding his endorsement of James, who almost immediately garnered the backing of a wide swath of city elected officials upon the announcement of her bid.
“I think of Tish James as a trailblazer, rising from public defender to public advocate,” he said.
