Jets claim free-agent kicker

-

The Jets claimed free-agent kicker Jason Myers off waivers Tuesday, the team announced.

Myers, who lost the Seattle kicking job to veteran Sebastian Janikowski, had made 81% of his field goals in 2 ½ seasons with the Jaguars.

Myers’ arrival surely means that veteran Cairo Santos, who has missed much of the summer with a groin injury, will get his walking papers. Free-agent kicker Kai Forbath, who was released by the Vikings this week, is working out for the Jets today, a source said.

Myers will compete with Taylor Bertolet, who has made all three of his field-goal attempts and extra points in the first two preseason games.

“Bertolet has done a hell of a job,” Jets special-teams coordinator Brant Boyer said this week. “His body of work since he’s been here, I think he was 84% through the spring. Showing kickoff leg. I think it’s outstanding. He’s done everything we have asked him to do.”

Santos was expected to be the team’s starter entering camp, but he simply couldn’t get healthy.

In a corresponding move, the Jets released wide receiver Jonah Trinnaman.
