Brazilian soccer official sentenced

A disgraced ex-Brazilian soccer official gave himself a red card Wednesday before he was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the sprawling FIFA corruption scandal.

A weepy Jose Maria Marin, 86, told a judge that he “sincerely regret(s)” the decisions that led to his stunning fall from grace in the sport he described as his greatest love.

“Sadly, it has become my downfall, my nightmare," he added in a halting statement to Brooklyn Federal Court Judge Pamela Chen.

Marin was found guilty last December of accepting more than $6 million in bribes in exchange for awarding lucrative marketing and broadcast deals.

He is one of more than 40 people and entities tied to international soccer who faced criminal charges in the U.S. in connection with schemes that involved hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.
