Gov., Nix: No armed teachers for N.Y.

- BY LARRY MCSHANE

Gov. Cuomo and Democratic challenger Cynthia Nixon agree: Spending federal education money to arm New York’s teachers would be a total misfire.

“New York cannot and will not be party to this insanity,” Cuomo wrote Thursday in a letter to the state Education commissioner about the guns-for-school staff proposal floated by the Trump administration.

“This mind-boggling, NRA-approved proposal would do nothing to keep our students safe and would actually put them at greater risk by making guns more accessible in the worst possible place: our classrooms.”

Nixon, responding to the reports that federal Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was considering the plan, said the government needs to invest in helping New York’s 2.6 million students rather than purchasing an arsenal for the state’s teachers.

“President Trump, our schools don’t need more guns,” said actress-turnedpolitician Nixon. “We already have metal detectors, aggressive school resource officers, and we’re even suspending kindergarteners. Where does it stop?”

Both Nixon and Cuomo were outraged by the proposed use of federal grants intended to assist students for the purchase of weapons.

“It is particularly repugnant that the federal government is reportedly considering using funding intended for academic and enrichment opportunities in schools serving low-income students,” said the governor.

Nixon ripped the gun-buying plan, asserting that aid for the students is more important that arms for the faculty.

“We need to invest in schools, not jails, across New York — and, frankly, across America,” she said. “Our children need school counselors, school psychologists and social workers.”
