A final act of bravery by McCain

- BY PETER SBLENDORIO

Sen. John McCain is discontinuing medical treatment a little over a year after he revealed he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma.

His family announced the news in a statement Friday, saying McCain, 81, had made the choice to end treatment for the aggressive form of brain cancer.

“John has surpassed expectations for his survival,” the statement reads. “But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. “Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers.”

The Arizona politician and 2008 Republican presidential nominee announced in July 2017 that doctors had discovered the cancer while operating on him to remove a blood clot above his eye.

The tumor was removed during surgery at the time.

In addition to the family statement, McCain's wife Cindy wrote in a tweet Friday, “I love my husband with all my heart.”

“God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey,” she continued.

Their daughter, TV commentator Meghan McCain, also thanked those who have supported her father and their family.

“My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year,” she tweeted.

“Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. We could not have made it this far without you — you've given us strength to carry on.”
