Fire-injured worker back

- Esha Ray

A construction worker injured in a propane tank fire near the Statue of Liberty — which nearly sparked a “catastrophic” explosion — is back on the job, his employer said Tuesday.

The worker, employed by New Jersey firm Grandview Waterproofing, suffered minor burns when two 100-pound tanks caught fire about 200 feet from the base of the statue on Liberty Island Monday afternoon, the FDNY said.

After one tank burst into flames, another tank fell over and started leaking gas from its relief valve and caught fire as well, FDNY officials said.

Fire marshals on Tuesday said the blaze was accidental, sparked by an “ignition of propane vapors” during roofing work on the new security screening facility on the island.

Around 3,400 tourists were evacuated and the worker refused medical attention — but fire officials said it could’ve been worse. “With that much propane … one of the tanks exploding could’ve been catastrophic,” FDNY Manhattan Commander Roger Sakowich said.
