More ferries? Water great idea, sez Blaz

Mayor de Blasio is seeking to grow the NYC Ferry service after it finished its first six routes, he announced Wednesday.

At the launch of the Lower East Side ferry route that runs from Wall St. to Long Island City, Queens, de Blasio said his administration will make decisions about adding docks and routes to other parts of the city by year's end.

“It works better than anyone imagined,” he said. “Now, we have big decisions ahead about other parts of the city and there's a lot of parts of the city that want ferry service. So you're in the lucky first wave.”

The NYC Ferry — operated by California-based Hornblower, with routes from the Lower East Side, Soundview in the Bronx, Astoria and Rockaway, Queens, south Brooklyn and the East River to Midtown and Wall St. — has carried 6 million passengers in a year (the subway hauls that many people in a single day).

The base fare of the ferry will be $2.75.

Michael Marino, a Lower East Side resident, near the ferry's dock, said the boat would be a better ride than his commute to Baruch College on 23rd St., which requires a bus and two subway lines.

“This, behind me right here, is gonna cut that commute to a third of the amount of time,” he said.
