Hizzoner & Fla. survivor in vote push

- BY JILLIAN JORGENSEN

The March for Our Lives now has a voter registration offshoot — Mayors for Our Lives.

Mayor de Blasio and Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg announced a bipartisan national effort to register young voters Thursday in an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

“What we’re doing with Mayors for Our Lives is we’re announcing a campaign that’s bipartisan, with Republicans and Democrats, to register a new generation of voters,” Hogg said.

Hogg has become a vocal proponent for gun control in the wake of the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

The effort includes more than 50 mayors, including de Blasio, who have pledged to get behind a nationwide effort to sign up voters between the ages of 18 and 29 with registration drives in high schools and on college campuses leading up to National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 25.

“We’re going to reach younger folks, students even at the high school level getting ready to vote and beyond, and they’re going to be game changers in our society,” de Blasio said.

New York recently held its own citywide voter registration day in high schools. And de Blasio has repeatedly praised Hogg and his generation for speaking out about issues that matter to them — particularly gun control.

“When it comes to gun safety, what I hear from younger voters is uncompromising — they believe it’s a matter of life and death, and they’re right,” de Blasio said. “And what David and his colleagues have done is changed American politics and awoken a different sleeping giant, which is younger voters.”

Hogg said the surprise victory of Andrew Gillum in Florida’s gubernatorial primary shows that there are many newer voters whose opinions haven’t been counted in polls.

“Polls do not register people that are newly registered a lot of the time,” he said. “They don’t expect young people to go out.”
