Betances rocked by Tiger blasts

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

Over his previous 39 innings pitched over 40 appearances, Dellin Betances had allowed three earned runs and just two homers.

Thursday night, he reached that mark in one third of an inning. The back-toback homers to Victor Martinez and Niko Goodrum gave Betances his second blown save and fourth loss of the season.

It was the first time in his career he had given up two homers in a game.

“I missed a couple spots, I was trying to go away on Martinez and yanked a heater into his hot zone middle in,” Betances said. “The other guy, I’ve done that before, breaking ball for strike, he was able to hit that out. Got to give credit to them, but I missed my spot on the Victor Martinez ball.”

FRAZIER FEELING BETTER

Outfield prospect Clint Frazier began a rehab assignment with Class-A Tampa Thursday morning, going 1-for-3 as the designated hitter with a single.

The 23year old has not played since July 19 because of post-concussion symptoms. He initially suffered the concussion in spring training colliding with the wall and seemed to aggravate the symptoms making a diving catch with the Triple-A club

In 15 games with the big league club this season, Frazier had a slash line of .265/.390/ .353. In 52 games with the Triple-A club, Frazier slashed .302/.387/.566 with 11 home runs and 22 RBI.

GREGORIUS FOR LABOR DAY

Didi Gregorius could be back in the lineup by Monday if all goes well, Boone said.

“We’ll see,” Boone said. “I thought it was a good day yesterday. Being able to get out and hit, take some ground balls, start to really to do some form running type things. We ramped him up pretty hard the last two days into that. Today’s kind of a step back, laying low today, recovery day.

“We’ll just kind of see how it unfolds this weekend for him. We’re at Thursday now, today’s a light day. It’s kind of day to day. How is he tomorrow, how does he bounce back? Can he keep up the way he’s been able to run, those kinds of things,” Boone continued. “And then I think it’ll become more clear. I would say it’s possible but I don’t think we’re close to being able to make that judgment yet.”

Gregorius suffered the heel injury in an awkward collision at first base Aug. 19.

DAILY JUDGE-MENT

Aaron Judge continued his rehab from the fractured right wrist, but is not yet ready to swing a bat. Thursday he ran the bases and did work in the outfield. He played catch “from a bit further away,” Boone said.
