Bidens join vets in trek for psych ills

- BY LARRY MCSHANE

Former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife joined six veterans for the final steps of a 1,000-mile journey to benefit fellow wounded warriors struggling with mental illness.

The wandering veterans — three from the U.S., three from Britain — laid down a wreath at Ground Zero before marching with the Bidens to the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden.

“In my career, I’ve had the privilege of meeting an awful lot of combat veterans,” Biden (inset) said Thursday. “I’ve never found one I didn’t want to stand next to.”

The Walk of America, organized by the group Walking with the Wounded, raises money to help treat mental health issues suffered by veterans returning from war zones. The costs of the walk are entirely funded by corporate sponsors, with 100% of the money raised directed to assisting the veterans.

“Too often we let our wounded warriors go home and they recover in isolation,” said Ed Parker, leader of Walking With the Wounded. “We need your help to succeed in what what we’re going to succeed in.”

Jill Biden donned sneakers for the couple’s stroll, with her husband reiterating how much works still lies ahead to help our veterans.

“They need help,” said the ex-veep. “It takes courage to come out and say, ‘Look, I’m battling.’ Three-hundred-thousand have come home struggling.”

Jill Biden recalled her son Beau returning from his deployment to Iraq and talking about “the struggles in the men and women he served beside. Our troops don’t just fight together, they recover together, too.”

Team member Kev Carr, a British Army vet who struggled with mental health issues, said he was homeless, alone and suicidal after serving in the military. Now he’s ready to reunited with his kids after joining his brothers on the walk.

“I’m touched, I’m honored, I’m humbled,” Carr said. “Ask a friend, ask a neighbor: ‘Are you OK? Are you sure?’”
