Dems nix dinner at L.I. hall over NRA event

-

The Nassau County Democratic Committee let a catering hall have it with both barrels over its booking of a National Rifle Association event.

The political group bailed out of its Oct. 22 dinner at The Inn at New Hyde Park over the NRA fund-raiser, citing a conflict with Democrats’ pro-gun-control plank.

“We’re a political party, not the American Dental Association,” Party Chairman Jay Jacobs said. “We have to stand for the issues that are important to us.”

The decision came after parents urged the inn to part ways with the gun-rights group before its Sept. 27 dinner and auction. The restaurant said it would honor its contract with Friends of the NRA, which booked the space last December.

“We contracted an event space to the Nassau County Democratic Committee on Aug. 27, 2018, at which time they did not provide us with a deposit,” said restaurant general manager Cynthia Pesce. “They canceled the event before ever giving us a deposit. ”

The decision will likely cost The Inn about $40,000, according to Jacobs.

“On one level, I feel badly,” he said. “But there’s a principle here, a serious issue. … It’s going to be a bit of time before we can go back there.”
