18 months for cocaine bust gamer

- Emilie Ruscoe and Leonard Greene

A Fortnite fanatic was sentenced Friday to 18 months in jail for smuggling cocaine in an operation she said she joined to help her family in Puerto Rico survive Hurricane Maria’s aftermath.

Prosecutors said they didn’t believe Nicole Lorenzo Cortez’s sob story of turning to a life of crime to help her desperate family.

They said the 20-year-old gamer’s hurricane defense was nothing more than a greedy attempt to play the system like a video game.

Authorities said Cortez flew into Kennedy Airport from Puerto Rico with 30 pounds of cocaine in her luggage on Jan 6.

Court papers said Cortez was carrying $500,000 worth of the drug in two suitcases when federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents caught her at the airport, spoiling her $4,000 payday.

She’ll be out on bail until October when she is set to begin her sentence.
