Black actors sweep guest spot Emmys

- Kate Feldman

For the first time, all four Emmys for guest appearances went to black actors.

In comedy, Tiffany Haddish won for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” while Katt Williams took home a trophy for his role on “Atlanta.” Within the drama category, Samira Wiley won for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Ron Cephas Jones for “This Is Us.”

The wins, announced ahead of the official Sept. 17 ceremony, mark a milestone as Hollywood struggles to showcase diversity on television and in movies.

Black actors have previously won in all four categories, including Uzo Aduba in “Orange Is the New Black” and Joe Morton in “Scandal” recently, but never in the same year.

The larger acting field has a record 36 diverse nominees over last year’s 27. Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) and Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) look to repeat their 2018 wins for lead actor, while Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) is a frontrunner for lead actress in a comedy.
