Cy vacates over 3,000 open weed warrants
More than 3,000 New Yorkers with open marijuana cases — some dating back as far as the 1970s — can breathe a sigh of relief following the Manhattan DA’s decision to vacate their warrants, the latest mo pen warrant, they don’t collaborate with the NYPD and district attorneys to keep our communities safe.”
About 46% of those with outstanding warrants were under 25 at the time of their arrests, according to the DA’s office, and a colossal 80% of them were people of color.
“We’re taking one small step toward addressing the decades of racial disparities behind the enforcement of marijuana in New York City,” Vance said.
Judge McGrath vacated 3,042 cases. The mass dismissal means offenders will no longer face the often-harsh consequences of violation and misdemeanor warrants.
New Yorkers who will see warrants vacated as a result of Wednesday’s dismissals can contact defender services with any questions, though they are not required to.
“There are probably, the vast majority of these cases, we do not have current contact information,” Carolyn Wilson of New York County Defender services said. “It’s going to be an imperfect notification, at best.”
