Hizzoner ducks grill on housing
Mayor de Blasio will not have to endure an under-oath grilling over a policy critics say promotes racial and economic segregation in housing.
The Anti-Discrimination Center says the city’s “community preference” policy — which gives local residents priority for affordable housing subsidized by the city — reinforces racially and economically segregated nature of many city neighborhoods.
De Blasio has said the policy is crucial to winning approval of these projects in communities. So in a pending federal suit, ADC attorney Craig Gurian in July demanded de Blasio submit to a deposition because he alone can explain the city’s position.
On Wednesday, Manhattan Federal Magistrate Katharine Parker shot down the request.
“Given Mayor de Blasio’s lack of personal involvement in the adoption, modification and administration of the policy, his deposition simply is not warranted,” Parker wrote.
Gurian said he would appeal the decision, adding, “The decision is contrary to the facts and the law.”
