JAGS TAKE REMATCH Bortles outduels Brady this time

JACKSONVILLE — Blake Bortles threw four touchdown passes, three in the first half, and the Jaguars beat Tom Brady and the Patriots, 31-20, Sunday in a rematch of last season’s AFC championship game.

Bortles connected with Donte Moncrief, Keelan Cole and Austin Seferian-Jenkins for scores in the first 30 minutes, the second time he’s done that in his NFL career. Bortles completed 29 of 45 passes for 377 yards, with the four TDs and an interception. It was the best game of his five-year career.

It was the Jaguars’ first victory over Brady. They entered the game 0-8 against the Patriots quarterback.

The Patriots (1-1) trailed 24-3 in the third quarter before finally showing signs of life. But Dante Fowler, returning from a onegame suspension, stripped Brady for one game-changing play, and second-year receiver Dede Westbrook added another to seal the victory.

Westbrook took a short pass on a crossing route, made one defender miss and then outran another down the sideline for a 61-yard score. He got a key block from Cole.

Cole finished with seven receptions for 117 yards and a score. He made a one-handed catch on Jacksonville’s second drive and beat Eric Rowe for a 24-yard touchdown three plays later.

Jacksonville led 14-0 at that point, but unlike the game eight months ago — which had much more at stake — coach Doug Marrone didn’t sit on the lead.

BUCCANEERS 27, EAGLES 21

Courtesy of DeSean Jackson, Ryan Fitzpatrick rocked a pair of sunglasses and a partially zipped warmup jacket revealing a couple of gold chains and a large pendant resting on his chest.

“It’s nothing,” the Tampa Bay quarterback said of the garb after throwing for more than 400 yards and two touchdowns for the second straight week, leading the Buccaneers to a victory over the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles.

PACKERS 29, VIKINGS 29

Aaron Rodgers was sore. It wasn’t just his left knee that hurt.

His mobility limited while wearing a brace on his injured knee, the star quarterback said he got punched in the eye during a sack. He absorbed a couple other shots, too.

Once the game started Sunday, the adrenaline kicked in. The ending was kind of a downer for the two-time NFL MVP.

Rodgers was 30 of 42 for 281 yards and a touchdown, but the Packers played to a 29-29 draw with the Minnesota Vikings after giving up a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter.

CHARGERS 31, BILLS 20

As if Bills coach Sean McDermott didn’t have enough to worry about in trailing the Los Angeles Chargers 28-6 at halftime on Sunday, he had to contend with veteran cornerback Vontae Davis quitting on the team.

“Pulled himself out of the game. He communicated to us that he was done,” McDermott revealed after a 31-20 loss. McDermott provided no other details except to bluntly say, “No,” when asked if Davis was injured.

BRONCOS 20, RAIDERS 19

Brandon McManus kicked a 36-yard field goal just inside the right upright with six seconds left, pushing the Broncos to a victory over the hard-luck Raiders and denying Jon Gruden his first win as a head coach since 2008.

With no timeouts and 18 seconds left, Case Keenum hit Tim Patrick for a 26-yard gain to the Oakland 18. Cornerbacks Gareon Conley and Leon Hall couldn’t tackle him inbounds and McManus came on to give the Broncos (2-0) their first lead.

SAINTS 21, BROWNS 18

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints needed less than 10 minutes to obliterate what looked like a milestone victory for the seemingly cursed Cleveland Browns.

Wil Lutz kicked a 44-yard field goal with 21 seconds left, Cleveland kicker Zane Gonzalez pushed the second of his two missed field goals wide right in the final seconds, and the Saints held on for a 21-18 victory that extended the Browns’ winless streak to 19 games.

49ERS 30, LIONS 27

Jimmy Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes, Matt Breida ran for 138 yards and San Francisco’s longest TD run in four seasons, and the 49ers bounced back from a seasonopening loss by beating the Lions.

RAMS 34, CARDINALS 0

Todd Gurley ran for three touchdowns, Jared Goff threw for 354 yards and a touchdown and the Rams dominated the Cardinals.
