B’klyn man charged with going on trek to join ISIS

A Brooklyn man was busted on federal charges after his plan to join ISIS forces in Syria fell through last summer, court documents revealed Wednesday.

Rasheedul Mowla, 21, was nabbed by the FBI after his return to Kennedy Airport from a June 2017 trip to enlist with the global terrorist organization, according to court papers.

Mowla “admitted that… (he) was willing to fire weapons against others on behalf of ISIS and planned to die on behalf of ISIS,” court papers indicated. The confession was recorded after Mowla waived his Miranda rights both orally and in writing.

He was arraigned Wednesday morning in Brooklyn Federal Court and held without bail. A woman answering the phone at Mowla’s Brooklyn residence hung up on a reporter.

A five-page affidavit in support of an arrest warrant charged Mowla with “providing, conspiring to provide and attempting to provide material support and resources” to ISIS.

Mowla told authorities that he left New York for Saudi Arabia on or about June 1, 2017, claiming that he was traveling with friends to celebrate an Islamic religious holiday, said the affidavit from FBI agent Elizabeth Miller of the New York Joint Terrorist Task Force.

The defendant, arrested after his Aug. 29, 2017, return trip, admitted the tale was a ruse and his intention was to slip into Syria and become a terrorist fighter.

“Mowla knew ISIS was a terrorist organization, had previously heard reports on ISIS in the news, and knew ISIS members killed people and that ISIS committed terrorist attacks,” the affidavit added.

There were no details on how Mowla was stopped from entering Syria.
