Clarity on Bert & Ernie

Everybody’s still wondering whether Bert and Ernie are gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Mark Saltzman — the “Sesame Street” writer who made headlines Tuesday when he said in an interview he viewed the characters as a couple — backtracked, saying his words had been taken the wrong way.

“You just bring what you know into your work,” Saltzman told The New York Times. “Somehow ... that turned into Bert and Ernie being gay. There is a difference.”

In a statement, Sesame Street Workshop said Bert and Ernie are “best friends.”
