Beaten pup found in Bx. on the mend

A beagle puppy beaten within an inch of its life and tied to a pole in the Bronx is healing.

The 4-month-old pup was shaking when she was found on E. 182nd St. in Belmont at about 2:30 p.m. Monday. Cops took her to the nearest Animal Care Centers of NYC facility.

One of the dog’s eyes was swollen shut, and she had cuts on her head, back and shoulders, and several internal injuries, according to animal advocates helping the pooch, now named Cleo.

The strong-willed dog (photo) is being cared for at Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital in Manhattan.

Jody Harris-Stern of Looking Glass Animal Rescue said Cleo is a “survivor and a fighter.”

“You would think that after everything she’s been through she would be petrified by people, but she’s quite forgiving and looking for attention,” Harris-Stern said.

Cleo, she said, was “clearly abused.”

“Prior to being found she was hit pretty hard,” HarrisStern said. “Her cheekbones are symmetrically broken, meaning that she had her head slammed by a door or was hit by a very heavy instrument on both sides of her face.”

Harris-Stern and other animal advocates are not happy with the NYPD, saying the department is dragging its feet in looking for the puppy’s abuser.

An NYPD spokeswoman said its Animal Abuse Squad wants to review Cleo’s medical records, but no one has filed a report about the abuse. Once someone files paperwork, police will start an investigation, the spokeswoman said.

The Looking Glass Animal Rescue has raised $4,500 of the $6,500 needed for Cleo’s medical expenses.
