Nayda Ayala Quinones, a school teacher in Loiza, where just under 30,000 people live, said many of her students suffered emotionally after the hurricane.

Children whose families lost their homes became depressed and some didn’t want to return to school, she told the Daily News.

“It was very traumatic for a lot of kids,” she said.

Many of her students are now seeing therapists to help work through painful memories associated with the storm.

“We are trying to help them through their respective situations so that they can get settled again,” Quinones said.
