Plaster falls on platform at rush hour
Plaster from a 3-foot section of ceiling rained down on the platform of the Atlantic Ave.-Barclays Center subway station in Brooklyn on Friday morning.
The plaster fell in the middle of the express platform on the No. 4 and 5 lines at rush hour — 8:18 a.m.
Video taken by a rider and posted to Twitter shows plaster littering the platform while commuters look at the gaping hole in the ceiling.
“A small amount of plaster fell from the ceiling on a platform, and out of an abundance of caution, we are checking the entire station,” MTA spokesman Shams Tarek said. “President (Andy) Byford has also ordered a systemwide inspection of similar ceilings. We thank our personnel for their quick response and our customers for their patience while we address this.”
The MTA had to run express No. 4 trains local between Crown Heights-Utica Ave. and Nevins St. in both directions. Express No. 5 trains ran local between Franklin Ave and Nevins St. in both directions. Trains skipped the station until 11:11 a.m., according to the MTA.
The cause is still under investigation, transit officials said. The MTA’s engineering, maintenance, cleaning and train workers deployed immediately. The ceiling above the platform and the tracks was inspected before service resumed, the MTA said.
The ceiling at Borough Hall in Brooklyn crumbled to the platform in July, injuring a straphanger.
