Niners fear Jimmy’s lost for season

-

Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo gets carted off following tackle by Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Steven Nelson. Niners fear Garoppolo has torn ACL in left knee.

Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a leftknee injury just before a sideline hit Sunday during a fourth-quarter comeback attempt, and the 49ers are proceeding as though it’s a season-ending tear of his anterior cruciate ligament. “It’s a knee. We fear an ACL,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We’ll find out for sure (today).”

Garoppolo’s left leg twisted awkwardly as he planted his foot just before a helmet-to-helmet collision with cornerback

Steven Nelson at the Chiefs 7-yard line. It was a fateful scramble for 13 yards on thirdand-goal with 5:27 remaining.

Garoppolo will have an MRI today. He did not speak with the media afterward, and although Reuben Foster and a few players offered best wishes to him in the training room, many players didn’t know where he was before he eventually got carted up toward the team bus.

C.J. Beathard, who replaced Garoppolo for the 49ers’ remaining snap, said he talked to him in the training room and told him he’d be “praying for him.”

“Anytime you lose your starting quarterback — I mean it’s, everyone — it is a big deal,” Shanahan said. “It was when we lost our starting running back, too.” The 49ers saw an ACL tear also rob them of running back Jerick McKinnon, the 49ers’ high-priced addition and dual-threat asset who got hurt a week before the season opener. McKinnon responded on Twitter to Garoppolo’s injury with a simple emoji, one of a sad face.

“I feel for him personally. I know how disappointed he is,” Shanahan added.

EURO THRASH

Alexander Zverev beat Kevin Anderson on Sunday night to give Team Europe a victory in the second Laver Cup. Zverev won the final five points to defeat Anderson, 6-7, 7-5, (10-7). His victory helped Team Europe beat Team World, 13-8. Roger Federer earlier put Team Europe ahead by saving three match points for a 6-7, 7-6, (10-7) victory over John Isner.

HAWK FLIES AWAY

He gone. Well, sort of. Longtime Chicago White Sox broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson worked his final game Sunday, closing out a colorful TV career after three-plus decades in the booth. The White Sox paid tribute to Harrelson with a couple different videos, and he fought back tears throughout the ninth inning.

RECORD LOW FOR JETER’S MARLINS

The 25th anniversary of the Marlins franchise was seen by the fewest fans at home in team history. The Marlins became the first major-league team to draw fewer than 1 million fans at home since the 2004 Expos, beating the Reds, 6-0, Sunday before 13,595 to complete the Miami portion of their schedule.
