Party boat owner sues city
The owner of a party boat has filed a $20 million notice of claim against the city, accusing it of terminating his contract for a berth in Brooklyn over a shooting his company had nothing to do with.
Dwayne Braithwaite, owner of the Cpt. JP2, says he was harassed by the NYPD and other agencies after he refused to hire a security group recommended by a cop from the 72nd Precinct in Sunset Park.
“I was following all the rules and they totally kicked me out,” Braithwaite, 47, told The News.
He got permission to dock the boat at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in May. A few weeks later, a cop from the 72nd Precinct gave him the name of a security firm “that could assist,” but Braithwaite didn’t followed up.
Braithwaite says he started getting harassed by the police and Liquor Authority. In July, he was told the contract between Braithwaite and the dock was terminated by the Economic Development Corp. because of a nearby shooting May 25 However, there is no evidence his boat was involved, his lawyer Eric Sanders said.
In a statement to The News, the EDC said it “stands by its determination, and we are confident the court will agree with our decision, which was made in the best interest of the public.” A city Law Department spokesman said, “The termination of this contract is justified.”
