It IS too late to say you’re sorry! NFL apologizes for call

Ticked-off Jets fans will love to hear this in the wake of their team’s primetime loss to the Browns: The Daily News has learned that the NFL informally/privately apologized to folks on One Jets Drive for a botched call that loomed large in a 21-17 defeat.

The league’s back-channel mea culpa centered on defensive back Mo Claiborne’s holding penalty on the Browns’ failed two-point attempt with 47 seconds left in the third quarter. Claiborne was flagged for grabbing wide receiver Antonio Callaway near the goal line on a play that ended with Baker Mayfield getting sacked.

Cleveland, however, got another crack at it after offsetting penalties — a Browns offensive lineman was called for holding, too.

The Browns dusted off their version of The Philly Special with running back Duke Johnson taking the shotgun snap and flipping it to Jarvis Landry, who tossed it into the endzone to a wide-open Mayfield for a successful two-point conversion that tied the game at 14-14.

The Jets re-gained the lead at 17-14 before Mayfield engineered a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to snap the Browns’ 19game winless streak. STEWART OUT, BURNETT IN

The Jets’ 2017 third-round pick ArDarius Stewart was placed on practice squad injured reserve after suffering a severe ankle injury in practice, according to a source. Stewart was added to the practice squad last week after getting cut after serving his two-game suspension. Wide receiver Deontay Burnett was re-signed to the practice squad.
