Arrest in sick Bx. pup abuse

This cur is officially leashed — and handcuffed.

Police have arrested a 77year-old man they say dragged and hurled a 4-month-old beagle from the back of his truck in the Bronx — leaving the small dog with extensive injuries.

Loro Gjonaj of Yonkers is facing animal torture and abandonment charges for the attack near the corner of E. 182nd St. and Belmont Ave. on Sept. 17. He was given a desk appearance ticket and released.

Police said Gjonaj threw the pup — now named Cleo — from the back of his truck.

Later, Cleo (photo inset) was found tied to a pole near the corner about 2:30 p.m.

One of her eyes was swollen shut, and she had cuts on her head, back and shoulders, as well as several internal injuries, according to two animal advocates helping the pooch.

The dog — named after Cleopatra, the Egyptian ruler — is healing and being treated at the Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital in Manhattan.

Jody Harris-Stern of Looking Glass Animal Rescue, which is taking care of the dog, said Cleo is a “survivor and a fighter.”

“Her face is a mess, but thankfully she’s on the mend,” Stern told the Daily News. “Anything life-threatening seems to be off the table. She has a long road, but her prognosis is good.”

Animal advocates initially voiced their displeasure over police handling of the incident.

When cops first arrived at the scene, no witnesses could be found, so Cleo was taken to an Animal Care Centers of NYC facility. It wasn’t until Stern and others spoke out about Cleo’s injuries that the police got involved.

During the investigation, a witness surfaced who saw Gjonaj dragging Cleo from the back of a white Lincoln Mark LT pickup truck. Minutes later, he was seen throwing the dog onto the street before driving off. A police source said the suspect has one prior arrest, for gun possession in the Bronx in 1986.
