Cops bust 14-year-old in boy slay
Cops say they’ve arrested a 14year-old boy who fatally shot another teenager as he played hoops with friends on a Brooklyn basketball court.
Police busted Aaron Nathaniel, 14, Wednesday night, almost two weeks after fired two bullets into a group of teens playing basketball on the Chester Playground in Brownsville. One of his bullets hit 16-year-old Oluwadurotimi Joseph Oyebola in the head, killing him.
Nathaniel (inset) lives in the neighborhood, near the park, a police source said, and witnesses knew him by name.
His parents were cooperating with police, but he hadn’t been home for several days, the source said.
In a tweet Wednesday night, Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea credited a “partnership with the community” for his capture.
Police weren’t entirely certain he was in a gang, but they were investigating word that he was going to get an “ops” in the park — gang slang for attacking a member of “the opposition,” the police source said.
The young victim, known by his friends as Timi, was a churchgoing teen who was slated to get an academic award from Columbia University in November.
He lived in Queens, but he spent his Friday nights at the Abundant Life Christian Center on E. 98th St. in Brownsville for after-school activities, his family said. The church doesn’t open until 7 p.m., and he would often play basketball with his pals before heading to the center.
On Sept. 21, at about 4:50 p.m., he was sharing the court with three friends when gunshots pierced the air. Police believe Nathaniel was standing about 150 feet away from Timi, who collapsed to the ground, mortally wounded.
