To the rescue
As the steady toll of disease and death from exposure to the toxic air unleashed from the destruction of the World Trade Center grows, it has become sadly clear the billions set aside by Congress for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund in 2010 and 2015 will not be enough.
The grim facts, laid out by Special Master Rupa Bhattacharyya, mean that Washington must approve more money and this time make the Fund — due to close in 2020 — permanent. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice have diligently administered the law, but the reality on the ground, and increasingly, tragically, in the ground, demands more action.
As many researchers predicted, certain cancers and other ailments are only now manifesting in people who were caught in the thick grey ash during and after the attacks. As more firemen and cops and construction workers succumb, the VCF will be drained.
So once more members of Congress have introduced legislation to renew the fund. Don’t fight; just get it done.
