Bail-reform teen may get rob rap nixed

- BY SHAYNA JACOBS AND THOMAS TRACY

A Bronx teenager whose yearlong stint in Rikers made him a cause celebre for bail reform advocates may soon be rid of a lingering robbery charge.

The Bronx district attorney’s office moved Tuesday to dismiss a three-year-old case against Pedro Hernandez, provided he enroll in college before a May court date.

Hernandez, 19, was set to go on trial in Bronx Supreme Court for a Nov. 6, 2015, knifepoint schoolyard robbery he allegedly committed with his 20-year-old sister. His sibling, Ivany Hernandez got the same deal.

The youth became a poster boy for bail reform after spending a year behind bars for a 2015 shooting, unable to post bail that started at $250,000 and was reduced to $100,000. He was freed when the The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights charity paid his bond.

The Bronx DA threw out that case in September, citing problems with evidence. During his time in jail, Hernandez established himself as an honor student, and supporters say he landed a college scholarship.

Hernandez told the Daily News he’s ready to put the whole thing behind him.

“I feel great that it’s all over with now but I’m disappointed on how I had to fight the system for me to get the dismissal,” Hernandez said.

He and his attorney say the trial delays have kept him from starting college — which is now the only condition the DA’s office has asked for in return for tossing the case.

“The whole time I’m telling them I want to go to school. Can you please hurry up with the case? They drag it all along to now say okay go to school,” Hernandez added.

The Bronx DA did not reveal why the offered to drop their prosecution.
