Blaz cancels NY1 sitdown over strike
Mayor de Blasio canceled his weekly appearance on NY1 on Monday as striking Spectrum workers protested outside the media outlet's Chelsea studios.
Members of IBEW Local 3 — who have been out on strike more than a year — held an “informational leafleting action” to detail their disapproval with “the corporation's refusal to offer workers fair wages and benefits.”
The mayor (inset) has referenced the strike several times during his weekly appearances on Errol Louis' “Mondays with the Mayor” segment — but has never before declined to participate.
Roughly 1,800 union cable techs went on strike on March 28, 2017, after lengthy wage talks went nowhere.
“Since this strike began 19 months ago, Spectrum has accumulated billions of dollars in profits, while these hardworking New Yorkers and their families are struggling to survive,” de Blasio said in a statement. “The men and women of Local 3 IBEW deserve better. Spectrum ought to come to the table now and negotiate a contract in good faith – it's long overdue.”
Spectrum officials say the firm has agreed to a contract that includes a 22% raise, and even more for some employees, as well as good health care options and a 401(k) saving plan.
But Local 3 IBEW says it will never agree to management's proposal to eliminate retiree medical coverage and other health benefit cuts for current staffers.
