3 rapists get what they deserve
Three convicted rapists who violently targeted Asian prostitutes got a combined 200 years in prison Wednesday.
Two of the sex offenders, Fernando Sandel, 30, and Joey Cruz, 29, each got 75 years behind bars while a third man, Isaias Rivera, 35, was hit with a 50-year prison term for a series of heartless acts in 2015.
They were convicted at trial in Manhattan Supreme Court on charges including predatory sex assault, conspiracy, rape, robbery and strangulation.
The first victim was found on Backpage.com and lured to a Midtown hotel room, where she was bound by her ankles and wrists with zip ties on Aug. 3, 2015. The trio also peppersprayed her and sexually assaulted her.
Another victim was attacked in a similar fashion the next day.
Cruz and Rivera also peppersprayed and sexually attacked a third victim in the Bronx in June of that year.
“The defendants targeted women who they thought would not report these vicious crimes to law enforcement, and throughout these proceedings and trial testimony, they claimed these survivors could not be believed,” District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. said.
“We believed them, and continued to fight for them long after the verdict, helping ensure that they secured what they need to recover from this trauma — including housing, immigration assistance and trauma-informed counseling.”
