Cops arrest landlord over evict effort

- BY LEONARD GREENE

After months of complaints about a SoHo subletter who won’t pay his rent, won’t move out, throws loud parties and is a menace to his neighbors, the police finally moved in and made an arrest.

They took his landlord to jail.

For nearly a year, artist and curator Bonnie Rychlak has been trying to get gaming executive Ted Owen out of the Lafayette St. loft she sublet to him to make a little money after her husband died. She even got a marshal to tack a 72-hour eviction notice on the door last week.

But when Rychlak, 67, went to the building Sunday to retrieve a package, she ran into Owen. A short time later, Owen, 52, called the cops, and Rychlak was carted off to Manhattan’s 5th Precinct, charged with aggravated harassment for allegedly phoning Owen and making threats. “I conspired to destroy your reputation and I’ll keep the door open for that,” she told him, according to cops.

Rychlak said she never called Owen and was incensed cops took his word over hers.

“I feel like I’m in a Hitchcock movie,” she said “Everything is turned upside down.”

Rychlak was released with a desk appearance ticket.

The eviction notice ordered Owen out by Oct. 15. But he claims he can’t vacate the third-floor unit because the elevator is being repaired.

He also owes Rychlak more than $28,000 in rent and fees, according to court papers.

But instead of paying up, Rychlak said he has taunted her with nasty emails and text messages, including one that threatened to “bankrupt” her.

And when Owen flipped the bird at a security camera outside the loft (inset), Rychlak said she is sure the message was meant for her.

“I’m scared of this guy,” she said. “He’s out of control.”

Owen could not be reached for comment.
