Kerr weighs in on mail bombs

- BY STEFAN BONDY

Steve Kerr has not been shy about his disdain for President Donald Trump.

So when crudely made bombs were sent to many outspoken critics of the president, including former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and even actor Robert DeNiro, Kerr admitted that he was “concerned” for his own safety.

“A little bit, yeah,” Kerr said Friday before the Knicks game against the Warriors. “But I think we all should be concerned. No matter who you are you should be concerned not just because of the bombs but somebody shooting you. It's the country we live in these days.”

The Warriors coach, whose father was assassinated in Beirut by two gunmen, has also been outspoken about lax gun laws in America and gave impassioned comments following the tragic shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School last February.

"It doesn't seem to matter to our government that children are being shot to death in schools. It doesn't matter that people are being shot at a concert, in a movie theater,” he said at the time.

On Friday, Kerr echoed those previous comments about gun violence.

“It's the country we live in these days. Innocent people get killed, innocent people get shot. It's a dangerous time to be alive right now,” he said.

Although he hadn't thought about it until asked by the Daily News on Friday, Kerr acknowledged it might be a good idea to have extra security measures in place during these divisive times.

“Maybe I should,” he said. “It's really sad and kind of speaks to where things are these days. But I have not done anything like that.”

A 56-year-old Florida man – Cesar Sayoc — was arrested Friday in connection with the bombs.

An NBA spokesman said no extra security measures have been instituted since the bombs meant for the President's detractors were intercepted earlier this week.

“Our focus as always is to have the highest level of security in place to ensure the safety of our fans, teams and staff,” league spokesman Mike Bass said.
