Ex-pol Sampson: Yeah, I’m a crook
Former Brooklyn state Sen. John Sampson pleaded guilty to two counts of embezzlement Friday, but a federal court judge did not immediately accept his plea.
Sampson, 53, who’s in the middle of a five-year prison sentence for obstructing justice and lying to the FBI, was pulled back into court proceedings after appeals judges granted prosecutors’ request to reinstate two embezzlement charges they said were wrongly tossed before his 2015 trial.
The disgraced ex-pol, wearing beige prison garb and a weary expression, admitted in court Friday he “failed to deposit” approximately $82,000 in stolen escrow monies as recently as 2008.
“Mr. Sampson, is that what you wish to do today — to enter a plea of guilty to those two counts?” U.S. District Judge Dora Irizarry asked.
“Yes, your honor,” Sampson replied. “It’s my choice. I want to move on.”
Sampson’s plea agreement includes no additional jail time. He still owes an estimated $91,000 out of $440,000 in stolen funds he must pay back.
Irizarry reserved accepting Sampson’s guilty plea Friday pending receipt of sentencing materials.
“I think it’s understandable that the judge wants time to consider the proposal,” Sampson’s lawyer, Josh Colangelo, told reporters.
“We hope all the parties agree it’s a fair resolution and this is how the case will resolve.”
