Ginsburg: B’klyn building renaming is Supreme honor
The “Notorious RBG” is “honored” by the push to name a Brooklyn public building in her name.
A group of elected officials and thousands online want the city to name the Brooklyn Municipal Building after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The 85-year-old top jurist, who was raised in Flatbush, was briefly hospitalized last week after falling and fracturing three ribs.
“Justice Ginsburg is aware of the proposal to rename the municipal building in Brooklyn after her and is honored that her name was put forward,” said her spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams floated the naming idea in September. Adams, as well as 43,175 who signed an online petition, want Mayor de Blasio to support the proposal.
Ginsburg, who graduated from Brooklyn’s James Madison High School, celebrated her 25th anniversary on the high court in August.
“At the time, she was only the second woman to sit on the Court and she has been a trailblazer and hero to many ever since,” Adams says in the petition.
“Ruth Bader Ginsburg has become an icon, affectionately referred to as the ‘Notorious RBG,’ ” the petition says. “In an era where popular culture puts performing artists and sports stars on a public pedestal, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has risen to incredible levels of iconic admiration and love.”
