Stranger to rescue at B’klyn site

An unhinged Brooklyn mother handed her 3month-old baby boy to a stranger during a bizarre rant at a construction site Tuesday, authorities said.

That stranger turned out to be a nurturing woman who held the sleeping infant as his mother came undone at a work site at Lenox Road and New York Ave. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens about 8:20 a.m., police sources said.

Shlome Stern, 38, who manages the work area, said the baby’s mother ran into a storage shed where workers hang out and started screaming at them.

“There were like 10 plumbers, and she started yelling and cursing at them,” Stern explained. “She had a little baby with her. She came out and a nice old lady walked by and she’s like, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’ The old lady felt bad so she took the baby; she was holding her baby.”

“She was like a mother to her, just trying to calm her down,” Stern said of the mysterious Good Samaritan. “Thank God the situation worked out the way it did.”

The baby’s mother, who lives in the neighborhood, was complaining about marital problems and screeched, “I’m not going to hell!” Stern said.

“[The mother] was crying and screaming and yelling, and then all of a sudden she collapses on the floor,” he added. “The old lady called the cops the first time because I was busy inside. So we called the cops again, about 100 officers came. The mother, she just picked herself up and ran off.”

The whole scene was captured on video. The Good Samaritan can be seen holding the boy while trying to console his mother as she walks around and argues with people. Finally, the 26-year-old mother faints. After a few minutes, she gets up, walks and then runs away, the footage shows.

The baby, dressed in a coat and pajamas, appeared to be asleep for the entire ordeal, according to Stern.

His mother was found about a block away. Her identification and her husband’s ID were in a bag dropped at the construction site, cops said.

The healthy baby was taken to Kings County Hospital, where his mother was admitted to the psychiatric ward. No charges are expected to be filed, a police spokesman said.

“[The mom] didn’t look OK but when I saw her at the hospital she was all happy,” Stern said.

“Something was off with her.“

He had a similar impression of the boy’s father. “When the cops called the father he was like, ‘I’m at work, don’t bother me,’ ” Stern said. “It’s very, very sad. Crazy people shouldn’t have kids.“

The Good Samaritan left before she could be questioned, police said.

Detectives would like to talk to her further to get an accurate time line of events, a police spokesman said.
