Fla. shooter in clash with jailer

- BY RACHEL DESANTIS

The Parkland, Fla., school shooter is facing new charges after allegedly attacking a detention deputy at the Broward County Jail.

Nikolas Cruz (photo), accused of killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, has been charged with aggravated assault on an officer, battery on an officer and use of an electric or chemical weapon against a law enforcement officer, online records show.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Broward County sheriff's office.

The arrest report says a fight between Cruz and the deputy broke out after Cruz was asked not to drag his sandals on the ground as he walked.

After flashing a middle finger, Cruz rushed the deputy as he stood up and struck him in the face before taking him to the ground and striking him multiple times on the top of his head.

As the two fought on the ground, Cruz grabbed hold of the deputy's conductive electronic weapon, which discharged as the deputy tried to get it back.

Once the deputy regained control of the weapon, he was struck several more times by Cruz before he, in turn, struck Cruz in the face.

The suspected school shooter then retreated, and was taken into custody.

The charges come in addition to the 17 charges of premeditated murder and attempted murder in the first degree that Cruz, 20, received after the February attack.

A judge entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf in March, and prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty.

The Florida man made headlines earlier this week after it was revealed he registered to vote in July while behind bars.
