Mickey chuckles at Met insult
Mickey Callaway and his new GM may not be on the same page yet.
Moments before Jacob deGrom was officially crowned the NL Cy Young winner, Jack O'Connell of the Baseball Writers' Association of America took an on-air shot at the Mets.
“He's getting more support from the writers than his teammates,” O'Connell said Wednesday night.
Callaway let out a chuckle before turning around to look at Brodie Van Wagenen.
Let's just say the new GM wasn't having it, as his face remained stoic as ever.
The two were joined by fellow members of the Mets brain trust in Van Wagenen's office to celebrate the occasion.
Van Wagenen then let out a loud “Yeah,” upon deGrom being named the fourth Cy Young winner in franchise history, before embracing Callaway.
It's obvious the former agent and deGrom rep has a ton of work on his offseason plate to reload the Mets futile lineup, responsible for costing the ace several wins.
But despite collecting only 10 victories on the season, deGrom won the prestigious pitching award in a landslide — collecting 29 of 30 firstplace votes over Max Scherzer of the Nationals and Philadelphia's young ace Aaron Nola.
At some point, Mets brass will meet face-to-face with deGrom in what may turn into a tense discussion surrounding the ace's future in Flushing.
For now, though, all smiles.
And a little bit of awkwardness.
