Gonzaga beats Duke in stunner

-

Zion Williamson has suffered his first college loss.

And Duke's Maui mastery is over as Gonzaga blocked the Blue Devils out of another title.

Rui Hachimura scored 20 points and No. 3 Gonzaga blocked four shots in the final 46 seconds to hold off five-time champion Duke 89-87 Wednesday in the Maui Invitational title game.

Duke (5-1) trailed by 16 in the second half before mounting a massive charge with a series of dunks and drives to the basket. After the Blue Devils tied it at 87-all, Hachimura scored on a hard drive to put Gonzaga up.

The Zags (6-0) missed four free throws to give Duke a final shot, but Brandon Clarke blocked R.J. Barrett's drive on the game's final play.

Gonzaga beat a No. 1 team for the first time and ended Duke's unbeaten streak on the Valley Isle (17-1) with its second Maui Invitational title.

YANKS DEAL

Brian Cashman is keeping busy ahead of the holiday.

Just days after making a deal for starter James Paxton, the Yankees on Wednesday acquired outfielder Tim Locastro from the Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-hander Drew Finley and cash considerations.

Locastro, 26, suited up in 18 games for the World Series losers, hitting .182 during 14 plate appearances.

The Auburn, N.Y. native, who played college ball at Ithaca College, had been designated for assignment Tuesday and will likely serve as a depth option should injuries arise.

Finley spent the last three seasons with the Class A Staten Island Yankees, going 2-4 alongside a 7.24 ERA this year.

21 SEASONS?

Dirk Nowitzki hopes to start his record 21st season with the same franchise in December as the Dallas Mavericks star continues a longer-than-expected recovery from ankle surgery seven months ago.

The 13-time All-Star said he was gradually increasing activity without any setbacks after having one before the start of training camp.
