Ocasio’s kicks head for exhibit
These shoes were made for walking, and in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s case, campaigning.
Ocasio-Cortez, the U.S. Representative-elect for New York’s 14th Congressional District, has loaned her first pair of campaigning shoes to an exhibit at Cornell University.
And these are no ordinary footwear.
“I knocked doors until rainwater came through my soles,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on June 29, with a photo of the now-famous zipup loafers.
“Respect the hustle. We won bc we out-worked the competition. Period,” she wrote.
Her well-worn shoes — complete with hole in the left sole — will be a part of “WOMEN EMPOWERED: Fashions from the Frontline” exhibit, which debuts on Dec. 6.
The Cornell Costume Collection thanked Ocasio-Cortez for her generosity and said the 29-year-old’s shoes represented “hard work, dedication, determination, and commitment of the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.”
The “groundbreaking exhibition” will feature garments worn by prominent politicians, athletes, artists, activists and educators.
“Feminism and fashion have the potential to go hand in hand, and the pieces in this exhibition prove just that,” Denise Green, director of the Cornell Costume & Textile Collection, said in a statement.
Other than Ocasio-Cortez’s shoes, there will be a knit gown designed by Dr. Eulanda Sanders, the inaugural suit worn by Texas Gov. Ann Richards as well as a gown worn Olivia (Livy) Langdon in the 1880s.
The shoes will be on display at The Cornell University College of Human Ecology on Dec. 6.
