Storm, UConn roll on

LJ Figueroa notched 25 points and 13 rebounds, Mustapha Heron added 20 points and nine boards and St. John’s ran away early from visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore to win its sixth straight, 85-64, on Tuesday night.

Mikey Dixon scored 14 points and he and Figueroa each hit four of the Red Storm’s 12 3-pointers. Shamorie Ponds collected six assists for St. John’s, which had a 34-20 advantage in the paint.

St. John’s never trailed and is 6-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Dixon’s trey capped a 20-9 opening run and St. John’s led by as many as 26 points to take a 52-28 advantage at the break. Dixon’s three put St. John’s up by 28 points with 14:18 to go and the Hawks didn’t get closer than 15 from there.

Ryan Andino scored 24 points with eight rebounds and Tyler Jones added 18 points for UMES (1-6).

UCONN 97, UMASS LOWELL 75

Jalen Adams and Christian Vital each scored 19 points and UConn beat UMass Lowell.

Alterique Gilbert and Josh Carlton added 15 points each for the Huskies (6-1), who won their third straight, all home wins over mid-major opponents.

DUKE 90, INDIANA 69

Zion Williamson scored 25 points, RJ Barrett added 22 and No. 3 Duke routed Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Tre Jones added 15 points and a fourth Duke freshman — Cameron Reddish — finished with 13 to help the Blue Devils (6-1) bounce back from their lone loss and win one of the made-for-TV event’s glamour matchups. This one featured a handful of potential NBA lottery picks — the Duke freshmen and Indiana’s Romeo Langford — on the floor at the same time.

LOUISVILLE 82, MICHIGAN STATE 78

Ryan McMahon hit two free throws with 7.1 seconds remaining in overtime before Jordan Nwora made another from the line with 3.1 seconds left to seal it as Louisville upset Michigan State.

NOTRE DAME 76, ILLINOIS 74

Notre Dame guards TJ Gibbs and D.J. Harvey scored 19 points each, and Juwan Durham sparked his team with all of his 10 points and five blocked shots in the second half, as the Irish held off late-charging Illinois in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game.
