M’S DEAL AGAIN

On heels of Cano trade, Mariners ship Segura to Phillies

-

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired two-time All-Star shortstop Jean Segura from the Seattle Mariners for veteran slugger Carlos Santana and infielder J.P. Crawford on Monday. The Phillies also get left-hander

James Pazos and righty Juan Nicasio in the trade. “Shortstop was an area we didn’t get a lot of production,” Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said. “Segura moves the needle for us as far as win expectancy.”

Segura hit .304 with 10 homers, 63 RBI, 20 stolen bases and had a .341 on-base percentage last season. He is signed through 2022 and is owed $60 million. He also got a $1 million bonus for approving the deal.

BULLS CAN HOIBERG

The Chicago Bulls came into the season thinking they would start to climb in the wide-open Eastern Conference with a promising group of young players. A coaching change wasn’t part of the plan. The skidding Bulls fired Fred

Hoiberg on Monday and promoted associate head coach Jim Boylen in hopes of turning around a miserable season. Chicago is averaging 103.4 points — 28th in the NBA — and is getting outscored by 9.6 per game. The Bulls are a woeful 5-19, better only than Cleveland and Phoenix.

Hoiberg, who had to deal with a veteran roster that didn’t fit his style early on and then injuries to key players starting in training camp, never found his footing in Chicago. It added up to a 115-155 mark with one playoff appearance in three-plus seasons.

TRIO OF HEISMAN FINALISTS

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Ohio State’s

Dwayne Haskins are the Heisman Trophy finalists, ensuring a quarterback will win the award for the 16th time in the last 19 years.

Tagovailoa has been the favorite for most of the season, but Murray and Haskins both finished strong. Unlike most seasons, there should be some real drama Saturday night when the Heisman is awarded in New York City.

Tagovailoa and Murray will also face off in the College Football Playoff.

The finalists are determined by the margin of votes received, starting with the third- and fourth-place finishers. Ballots from 928 voters were due Monday.
