Queens pol Ron Kim to run for public advocate

- Michael Gartland

Assemblyman Ron Kim plans to formally announce a run for public advocate Monday, joining a crowded field vying for the post.

Kim, a Queens Democrat, said if elected he plans to shift the office’s focus to helping New Yorkers eliminate their personal debt.

“My overall agenda is to put people over corporations,” he told the Daily News. “I’m not saying, ‘Blow everything up.’ I want to make our system work again for everyday people.”

Public Advocate Letitia James is leaving the job in January to become attorney general.

Kim, who represents Flushing and Willets Point, has criticized the deal to bring Amazon to Long Island City. The agreement will give the online giant nearly $3 billion in incentives.

In a recent New York Times op-ed, Kim and Zephyr Teachout, one of James’ opponents in the AG race, predict if the deal goes through, “serfdom is the style of ‘partnership’ the city should expect.”

And in a Daily News op-ed last month, he and state Sen.elect Jessica Ramos sought support of a bill that would allow the state to use eminent domain to “buy, cancel or monetize” $35 billion in New Yorkers’ student debt.

City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez announced his candidacy on Sunday. Ex-City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilman Jumaane Williams have also announced runs.
