Cops tried to calm ma in tot fight — O’Neill

- BY THOMAS TRACY

The city’s top cop said Thursday that his officers were trying to “deescalate” the wild clash between a young mom and city Human Resources Administration officers caught on viral video.

“I looked at the video and it was absolutely disturbing,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said during an interview on “The Joe Piscopo Show” on 970 AM. “I saw the body cameras worn by the cops, too, and the cops were doing their best to deescalate the situation.”

O’Neill said HRA Commissioner Steven Banks is expected to come out with “new protocols” on what staffers should do before calling 911 in the future.

“They are taking a serious look on what they need to do,” O’Neill said. “We are going to make sure that if we are called to an HRA facility again, that an agency supervisor is there with us.”

O’Neill said that the two officers who responded — one of whom was caught on the video threatening Jazmine Headley with a stun gun — are young, each having less than three years with the NYPD.

An internal review of what happened was underway, O’Neill said.

“I just want to assure the public that we are taking this very seriously and should have some findings very soon,” O’Neill said.

Headley, 23, landed in jail last Friday after her confrontation with police inside a crowded waiting room at the public benefits office in downtown Brooklyn.

A video of showing officers snatching Headley’s 18-monthold son from her arms set off a firestorm of criticism.

Following the outrage, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez dropped all charges against Headley on Tuesday. A day later, Mercer County, N.J., prosecutors agreed to fast-track a plea deal to resolve an open warrant that sent her to Rikers Island for five days.

Headley is back home with her son, her attorneys at Brooklyn Defender Services said.
