Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter daughter dies suddenly
The daughter of Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter died suddenly after a fire drill at the North Carolina school where she worked.
Perquimans County Schools assistant superintendent James Bunch said fifth-grade teacher Kim Hunter Daugherty, 45, died at Herford Grammar School Thursday morning. She’d been with the district for nearly 20 years, six of which she spent teaching at the grade school.
Daugherty said she was not feeling well when she returned to class following the routine fire drill before she collapsed around 10:30 a.m., according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Superintendent Matthew Cheeseman said her death was linked to complications of a pulmonary embolism, WAVY reported.
No students were around at the time.
Bunch remembered Daugherty as “a great teacher” and “a great colleague.”
She also had a talent for baseball like her famous father, who played for the Oakland A’s and the New York Yankees from 1965 to 1979.
Hunter, dubbed “Catfish” by Athletics owner Chuck Finely, was an eight-time All Star, nabbed five World Series titles and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.
He died in 1999 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
