Rep. Omar to Trump: You are a hypocrite and hater

Rep. Ilhan Omar is punching back.

The freshman Minnesota Democrat ripped President Trump as a hypocrite on Wednesday after he called on her to resign over controversial comments about Jewish influence on American politics — claims she has since apologized for.

“Hi,” Omar tweeted at Trump. “You have trafficked in hate your whole life — against Jews, Muslims, Indigenous immigrants, black people and more. I learned from people impacted by my words. When will you?”

The President, who has a long history of inflammatory rhetoric that critics say amounts to textbook racism, demanded Omar’s resignation Tuesday over a pair of tweets she posted over the weekend that suggested U.S. politicians are taking pro-Israel stances only because they are paid off by influential Jewish lobbying groups. Omar (photo), who is Muslim, also used the term “Benjamins” to refer to money and critics charged that had clear anti-Semitic undertones. Amid bipartisan pushback, Omar issued a statement “unequivocally” apologizing for her comments and said that, while she believes lobbyists have too much influence on American politics, she should not have played on anti-Semitic tropes to get her message across. Trump didn’t buy Omar’s apology and called it “lame.” “I think she should resign from Congress, frankly,” Trump said at the White House Tuesday. A White House spokesman did not return a request for comment on Omar’s rebuttal.
